DAY 5 - August 10
Ding Ning, 26, and Li Xiaoxia, 28, claim the gold and the silver medals in the women's table tennis singles, respectively. Four years ago in the London final, Li shed her moniker as "Mrs. Number 2" by beating compatriot Ding 4-1 to clinch gold. In the Rio rematch, the result was reversed. "It was difficult for us both," Ding said excitedly. "I can't believe it's real! Ding Ning, you made it!" (SINA.COM)
Lu Xiaojun, 32, wins silver in the men's 77kg weightlifting, smashing the men's snatch world record in the process with a 177kg lift. He won the gold medal in the same event at the 2012 London Olympics (SINA.COM)
Cheng Xunzhao, 25, secures bronze in the men's judo 90kg category against Mongolia's Otgonbaatar Lkhagvasuren. Placed 24th in judo's world rankings, Cheng was considered as an underdog, but he makes Chinese Olympic history as he secures the nation's first judo medal in men's 90kg category (SINA.COM)
Qin Kai (right), 30, and Cao Yuan, 21, win the bronze medal in the men's synchronised 3m springboard diving final. "We're a team, for good or for bad," Cao said regretfully, since they were aiming for gold. "We failed to perform as we expected today. This is fate, and this is the Olympics, full of surprises." (SINA.COM)
Xiang Yanmei, 24, shrugged off an unexpected neck injury to win the gold medal for China in the women's 69kg weightlifting final. Xiang, a world championship winner in 2013 and 2015, failed in her third attempt in the snatch, causing the 118kg barbell to fall awkwardly on the back of her head, thrusting her neck forward. "But I didn't think about it at all during the jerk, so it didn't affect my performance," she said (XINHUA)
