Russia held a grand military parade at the Red Square outside the Kremlin in Moscow on May 9, marking the 70th anniversary of its victory in the Great Patriotic War (1941-45),
Russia's term for World War II (WWII). At the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and about 20 other world leaders and heads of international organizations attended the commemoration.
More than 15,000 Russian soldiers marched through the square, followed by military vehicles on both land and air. Military units from 10 foreign countries also participated. An honor guard of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, consisting of 102 soldiers, was the first to present itself during the parade. May 9 is the Victory Day of Russia's Great Patriotic War. The Victory Day parade at the Red Square is Russia's convention to commemorate the end of WWII in Europe and demonstrate patriotic spirit to its nationals and the world.
