1. Talks Resume after North Korea's Nuclear Test

On October 9, North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test, the first such test of its nuclear capability. The UN Security Council held an urgent meeting over the issue and unanimously condemned the action. On December 18, the second phase of the fifth round of six-party talks, involving China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, North Korea and the United States, on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula resumed in Beijing amid China's diplomatic efforts.
