Since February, when the militant group Hamas won Palestinian parliamentary elections, the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has deepened. In June, the fighting worsened and hundreds of civilians were killed in the following months. Although ceasefire agreements were signed in November and December, the situation did not ease, largely because of the internal dispute between the two major Palestinian factions-Hamas and Fatah.
