President Hu Speaks Highly of 1911 Revolution
Share

The 1911 Revolution was "a thoroughly modern, national and democratic revolution" which shook the world and ushered in unprecedented social changes in China, according to Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Hu made the remarks during a keynote speech delivered at the ceremony held in Beijing Sunday morning to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the 1911 Revolution.

The Revolution of 1911 overthrew the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and ended the absolute monarchy that had ruled China for over 2,000 years.

Hu recalled the history between the Opium War in 1840 and the 1911 Revolution and concluded that the outbreak of the 1911 Revolution epitomized the longing of the Chinese people for national independence and revitalization.

It was also a manifestation of the Chinese people's unyielding and indomitable struggle for national salvation, Hu added.

He hailed Dr. Sun Yat-sen, leader of the 1911 Revolution, as a great national hero, a great patriot and a great leader of the Chinese democratic revolution.

"He stood in the forefront of the times," said Hu.

The Revolution of 1911 greatly freed the minds of the Chinese people, opened the floodgate for progress in China, and explored a path for the development and progress of the Chinese nation, according to Hu.

It would stand forever as a towering landmark in the course of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, said Hu.
