The remoteness of Qinghai Province, damaged roads and tough terrain have made rescue work difficult. The Central government, together with local authorities are scrambling, to ensure relief teams and materials can safely enter the quake ravaged regions.
National Highway 214 is the most important route leading to the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
The highway's Tong-tian-he Bridge is still open, having been unaffected by the quake.
Yuan Fuyu, official of Qinghai Pro. Transport. Dept., said, "So far,the roads to Yushu are basically running smoothly. But some important bridges have been damaged by the earthquake. We have conducted one way routes in order to ensure safety. We have already delivered 14 batches of materials, relief workers and equipment."
However, the western section of Provincial Highway 308 has been severely hit, with small vehicles being redirected to other roads.
