Chinese Scholars Slam Actions of Manila and Hanoi

Chinese scholars have criticized the Philippines and Vietnam for making trouble in the South China Sea.

One of them is Luo Yongkun, an expert with the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, who took them to task in an article carried by major Chinese news outlets.

On May 6, the Philippines illegally seized 11 Chinese fishermen and a boat from waters off China's Nansha Islands. Last month, Vietnam disrupted the normal drilling operations of a Chinese company in the waters off China's Xisha Islands.

Luo said that both countries have tried many times to egg the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on to pass a resolution concerning the South China Sea issue. He said Manila and Hanoi are trying to force ASEAN to take their side. The attempts to hijack ASEAN have disrupted the integration process.

Luo called this the most prominent negative factor hindering regional peace, stability and development. He said it goes against the trend of regional development and has resulted in rising risks to regional security.
