While world leaders gather in Shanghai for the start of the CICA summit, another multi-lateral organization bearing the city's name, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), is also making its mark.
For further cooperation. A ground-breaking ceremony for an SCO judicial exchange and training center was held on Tuesday at the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law.
Expected to be completed by 2016, the center will be a space for legal professionals from SCO member and observer countries to meet, learn, and collaborate on research in multiple areas.
The SCO was officially founded in 2001, as a way for China, Russia, and other Eurasian countries to discuss political, economic, and military cooperation.
On Tuesday, the SCO signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CICA, bringing together two of the region's forums focused on security.
Meanwhile, CICA's upcoming summit will likely increase its standing in the region. And with its new partnership with the SCO, CICA will look to enter the next phase of its development, and become a more cohesive and action-oriented organization.
The signing of the memorandum can be looked as a starting point of future cooperation between SCO and CICA. Each group has its own advantage in the region. More joint efforts are expected between the two groups to build a peaceful, stable and cooperative Asia. (CNTV.cn May 21, 2014) |
