A memorial service honoring Nelson Mandela has been held in the South African embassy in Beijing. The spirits of forgiveness and peace were felt, as ambassadors, academics and students gathered for the event.
At the rhythm of the South African national anthem, young children lay flowers.
"I didn't want him to die. I like him because he was a great man."
"If it weren't for Mandela, my mom and I would not be able to leave Africa and come to China."
It was a solemn occasion, where the boundaries and conflict of daily life were momentarily forgotten.
"Mandela left a towering monument...He was a symbol of justice...oppression. He was about equality," said Liu Guijin, former Chinese ambassador to South Africa.
Such is the respect ordinary Chinese citizens have for the anti-apartheid icon. Some attended multiple mourning services.
Attending the service were military personnel, academics, students and ambassadors based in Beijing.
Pride and respect fill the room as guests watch a movie documenting Mandela's legacy. They say it's the best way to celebrate his life and his achievements. Chinese representatives say people in China shall never forget his great smile and benevolent spirit of forgiveness. (CNTV.cn December 12, 2013) |
