A highway linking isolated county of Medog in the Tibet Autonomous Region to Zhamog Township in the north of Medog will be opened at the end of this month. The 117-kilometer highway will help locals connect with the outside world.
Many tourists visiting Medog send themselves postcards in order to get the county's rare postmark. It shows they made it to the isolated country of Medog in the southeast of Tibet, without a highway.
"I send this envelope as a postcard, as all the postcards have been sold out. Medog's postmark is meaningful, because it's very hard to get here." Tourist Li Chunzhi said.
This postal worker stamps more than ninety postcards a day. When the post office of Medog County first opened in 2008, it took a month to send mail to Beijing. But now, the postal car travels from Beijing to Medog once a week.
The completion of a tunnel through Galung La Mountain at the end of 2010, speeds up the mail service.
Besides the post office, residents in Medog also have access to a faster postal option called "express."
There is only one express station in Medog and it receives all kinds of products which people buy on the internet, including Clothing and electronic products.
But it's risky, when roads are cut off by severe weather like heavy snow.
For the couple who own this express station, the new highway to Medog will mean a better future for their business.
When the highway opens and the mountain road to the county is not cut off, I think Medog will have great chance to develop. Express station owner Oyang Longmei said.
Medog, which means "secret lotus" in the Tibetan language, is the last of the country's 2,100 counties to be connected via a highway.
