Taipei Zoo Calls on Public to Choose Female Cub's Name

Taipei Zoo in Taiwan is holding an open vote, asking the public to choose a name for its new baby panda. The female cub, born on July 6, is the daughter of giant pandas Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan.

People are currently choosing between the names of Tuan Yuan, Yuan Bao, Fen Yuan, Tang Yuan, Yuan Zaihua and the cub's current nickname of Yuan Zai.

The winning name will be revealed at the end of October. The cub currently spends most of her days sleeping, eating and drinking. Her parents Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan were given as a goodwill gift to Taiwan by the Chinese mainland.

Wu Yixin, Spokeswoman of Taipei Zoo, said, "The name Tuan Yuan takes one character from each of the names of her parents, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan. It also means reunion."
