A concert celebrating Bastille Day, the National Day of France, was held on July 14 in Paris. Chinese pianist Lang Lang made a surprise appearance, making history by becoming the first Chinese pianist to perform at the iconic Eiffel Tower.
This is the largest national day celebration in 20 years and Lang's appearance was probably France's best kept secret. The French government had flown the Chinese star pianist in from Hongkong on a private jet.
The stage was at the foot of the Eiffel tower, with a transparent roof and adorned with 30,000 lights. Many consider it to be the most spectacular set ever assembled at the tower.
"I am so honoured to be the only Asian performer at a grand national celebration like this. I am proud to be Chinese and hope my music can be inspiring to both the French people and the foreign visitors here," Lang said.
The audience were mesmerized by Lang's rendition of a piece by French composer Maurice Ravel. The audience rating of the concert reached its peak during Lang's 4 minute performance.
French critics heaped praise on Lang's show, commenting that it brings out the full elegance of the 19th century composer. (CNTV.cn July 15, 2013) |
