Turn to the fire that has killed at least 7 children at a private orphanage in central China's Henan Province. So far, six officials have been held responsible for the incident and suspended from their duties, including Yang Peimin, the head of the civil affairs bureau in Lankao County.
A woman named Yuan Lihai had used her home to shelter orphans. After the accident, she was admitted to a local hospital and said she will not adopt children in the future.
Yuan has adopted more than 100 abandoned children over the past 25 years using only her meager income as a market vendor and the subsistence allowance provided by the local authorities.
She became the focus of media attention following the fire. Although many people expressed sympathy for her suffering, there was also suspicion and complaints about her adoptions. Yuan became one of Lankao county's main providers of care for abandoned children, since there is not a single orphanage in the county of 760,000 residents.
