Danjiangkou Reservoir Relocation Completed

Relocation for the Danjiangkou Reservoir, part of China's South-to-North Water Transfer Project, has been completed.

More than 345,000 people have moved into new homes. The relocation started three years ago. It is the second largest relocation in modern Chinese water conservancy projects after the Three Gorges Dam project.

The water transfer project is divided into three routes. The Danjiangkou Reservoir is the water source for one of the routes, providing water to Beijing and Tianjin.

After the reservoir starts taking in water, an area of 144 square kilometers will be flooded. The capacity of the reservoir is 1.7 trillion cubic meters.

Additional canals will also be constructed connecting the reservoir with the Chinese capital. It is expected that by 2014, Beijing residents will be able to drink the water from Danjiangkoyu Reservoir.
