Rainstorm Hits Quake-Damaged Area in SW China

A heavy downpour has struck quake-hit county of Yiliang in southwest China's Yunnan Province. Tuesday's rainstorm is presenting all kinds of challenges for rescue workers.

The rainfall has reached more than 150 mm in Yiliang, causing floods in some villages.

Early morning storms caused landslides in Hewan Village, blocking the entrance to the area. According to the local government, almost all the houses in this village have collapsed. Fortunately, more than one hundred villagers have been safely relocated.

The rainstorm also caused mud-rock flows in Huaqiao Village, seriously injuring one woman.

Shen Dabin, a doctor, said, "During the rainstorm, her house collapsed. She was injured on her head, shoulder and leg. We have dealt with the wound temporarily."

With the roads blocked, a rescue crew had to carry her to the hospital by foot, where she'll stay to receive further medical treatment.

Experts said if the rainstorm continues over the next few days, Yiliang will be in an even more dangerous situation.

Li Lianju, Deputy Director of Land and Resources Department of Yunnan, said, "More than 30 experts have been assigned to areas where disasters are likely to occur. They will help guide relief work there."

Experts also suggest that residents remain at the relocation site, warning that it is dangerous to return to their homes.
