In northwest China's Gansu Province, where 2,700 families in Zhouqu County are moving into new apartments after losing their homes in a devastating mudslide two years ago.
It's been two years since the rain-triggered mudslide claimed more than 1,500 lives in the county. For their own safety, and to reduce pressure on the local environment, the affected families have been relocated to three areas.
Two of these areas are in Zhouqu, while the third is in the provincial capital of Lanzhou.
Wang Shengbao, a supermarket owner, is a Lanzhou resident who wants to do something to help the newcomers.
"We wanted to do something to help the victims. So I opened a supermarket here to bring them greater convenience. We hope they feel at home here," he said.
Residential buildings, boarding schools and hospitals for around 8,000 people were built at a cost of more than 600 million yuan (about $94.5 million).
The new district has a solid infrastructure, with water, electricity, internet and gas readily available. Zhouqu's reconstruction is projected to cost a total of 5.02 billion yuan (about $790.55 million). For the victims, it is a chance for a fresh start in life.
