Torch Relay of 26th Summer Universiade Begins

The torch relay for the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade has begun at Peking University, nine days after the flame was lit in a special ceremony at Tsinghua University.

The torch will reach Shenzhen University on May 10, where it will burn during the games.

The hundred-day countdown to the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen began with the torch lighting at Peking University on May 4, Chinese Youth Day.

Vice Premier Li Keqiang did the honors and declared the start of the relay.

The first torch bearer is Xing Yan'an, a hurdler at Peking University. Fifty-four torchbearers shared the 3.1 kilometer route which went past campus landmarks, including statues of the University's former president Cai Yuanpei and revolutionary leader Li Dazhao.

The Summer Games will be the largest of its kind to date, gathering student athletes from more than 200 countries and regions for 300 events.
