IAEA Chief Proposes High-Level Meeting on Nuclear Safety
Share

Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said on Monday that he had proposed to convene a high-level meeting involving its members on nuclear safety.

Amano said he had proposed to IAEA members that the meeting be held in Vienna, before summer, perhaps in late June.

The arrangement of the meeting is still in discussion, he said.

The current priority is to help Japan overcome current nuclear crisis, which remains "very serious," but IAEA must plan ahead, make assessment of the accident and discuss issues related to strengthening safety measures, Amano told the press at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna.

He also said since his recent visit to Japan, the information flow between the country and IAEA has been improved.
