Drama enthusiasts had a "beautiful encounter" on Thursday with avant-garde Chinese director Meng Jing-hui's latest production Yan Yu, or Beautiful Encounter, enjoying their premieres in Beijing.
The drama tells an extraordinary "triangle love story" set in an ordinary office building. The Young, urbane Han Dong, sociable and ambitious, falls in love with his co-worker, the beautiful and sensitive Mo Mo, then the lover of their boss.
The play features two big stars in its leading roles: Xia Yu, who won the best actor award at the 1994 Venice Film Festival at the age of 17, and Gao Yuanyuan, who has worked with many of China's 6th Generation of film directors, in several prize-winning films.
As one of the most innovative directors in China, Meng Jing-hui's plays have been very popular in the small theaters in Beijing. He selects topics from real life, and stirs up a storm of "experimental drama".
He has written and directed more than ten plays. The most influential including Comrade Ah Q, Waiting for Godot, Accidental Death of An Anarchist and Rhinoceros in Love.
The play will show at the Poly Theater in Beijing until April 15.
