The Expo showcased progress in science and technology. About 1,100 scientific and technological achievements with independent intellectual property rights were widely used.
The equivalent of 210 million bottles
The average daily consumption of drinking water at the Expo site was 1,600 tons, according to a report by the Shanghai Bureau of Expo Coordination. At that rate, by the end of the Expo, visitors had consumed the equivalent of 210 million 500-ml bottles of water. Fortunately for the environment, water was provided in environmentally friendly drinking fountains, not plastic bottles.
200 tons of vegetables
Visitors and staff at the Expo site were estimated to consume 200 tons of vegetables each day. Vegetables were supplied by 40 designated production bases around China.
377,000 characters
The work of the Expo volunteers required both physical strength and intellect. When the first batch of volunteers from Shanghai's Fudan University completed their service at the Expo site, they left a special gift for their successors—a guidebook filled with detailed information about where to find toilets, drinking fountains or how long it normally takes to enter the Saudi Arabia Pavilion. The guidebook was compiled with contributions from all volunteers and was completed in 21 days. The word count of the book is 377,000 characters.
1,017 vehicles
Of 1,017 new-energy public transportation vehicles inside the Expo site, 196 used fuel cells, 321 were electric vehicles and 500 were hybrid vehicles.
28,400 tons
Environmental protection and low-carbon emissions were two important concepts of the Shanghai World Expo. According to statistics, the large-scale application of new energy vehicles inside the Expo site could save 10,000 tons of fuel, reduce the emission of harmful substances by 118 tons and greenhouse gases by 28,400 tons. Public transportation inside the Expo site has achieved the goal of "zero emissions."
