Zhi Shu (Southern Metropolis Daily): We call the weeklong holiday the Golden Week precisely because we get so few of them. The public's opinion is to reform the current Golden Week holiday system, but this does not mean cancelling the Golden Week. People are disappointed with the Golden Week holiday because of the terrible traveling experience during that time.
The Chinese have too few holidays, so they have to rush out at the same time when a relatively long holiday comes around. When scenic spots are all totally overwhelmed, it's not easy to find joy in the experience. Second, the Chinese are still too poor to go far away for traveling. Most Chinese can only afford a domestic tour, so the country's tourism destinations are too crowded.
Although the trips are far from comfortable, the Golden Week still offers most Chinese the chance to go out. The paid annual leave system is not currently realistic. On the one hand, it's unreasonable to expect all companies to offer this welfare to their employees; on the other hand, if ordinary people choose to work, they will make more money, and thus some people will give up the paid annual leave for the sake of higher income.
If there were more holidays, people would not get so excited to rush to tourist spots at the same time. They would know how to make their holidays more comfortable and interesting. No matter how attractive a certain place of interest is, when people choose to go there in different holidays, they will no longer be so crowded. By then, the quality of holidays will surely improve.
Yan Juanjuan (China Chan Jing News): The proposal of implementing the Golden Week system was at first based on the hope of boosting China's tourism economy, rather than caring for ordinary people's realistic demands. As a result, people find the weeklong holiday burdensome when they have to share it with so many people at the same place of interest in a limited time. Traveling is no longer a way to help people get recharged, but is rather becoming a challenge.
To travel at the same time and to consume at the same time the conflict between supply and demand is extremely striking during the Golden Week. But in my opinion, people are changing their attitude of the Golden Week. Tourism is no longer the only choice. More people are using the week to relax and reenergize, go to the gym, library, for short-term training programs, and even reading, sleeping, walking and shopping are becoming popular during the holiday.
The Golden Week is not equivalent to a traveling week. For so many years, China's tourism industry paid more attention to traveling than to leisure. However, when the diversification of holiday spending is becoming a trend, the country's tourism industry will begin to pay attention to leisure and improve services for tourists. More importantly, a healthy way of life will thus take shape among the Chinese, which has far-reaching significance for the tourism industry.
Wang Chuantao (blog.sina.com.cn): When the National Day holiday is the only long holiday suitable for traveling, famous places of interest will undoubtedly become extremely crowded. In China, we only have weeklong holidays during the National Day and the Spring Festival and short holidays for the Dragon Boat Festival, Tomb Sweeping Day and May Day. If you want to visit a faraway destination, the National Day holiday is almost the only choice. The past Golden Week brings in a lot of money, but for the public, traveling during the holiday can be torturous.
Setting people free in the Golden Week will not help to make people feel happy. Instead, they may even suffer from the crowded and unsatisfactory holiday. Thus, the paid annual leave policy should be fully implemented as soon as possible, public holidays should be separated to different months, and the suspension of tolls on expressways must be expanded to short-term holidays too.
