Foreigners in Shanghai learn to make zongzi, a pyramid-shaped snack made of glutinous rice and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, on June 17, six days prior to the Dragon Boat Festival, a major traditional Chinese festival.

With a history of 2,000 years, the festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. During the festival, Chinese people usually prepare and eat zongzi and hold races of dragon boats. Other customs include hanging Chinese mugwort, an aromatic plant, and drinking realgar wine.
