A 2-week-old baby girl was saved by Turkish rescuers two days after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit the Province of Van in eastern Turkey on October 23. Rescuers also successfully saved the infant's mother and grandmother.
The powerful earthquake led to the collapse of about 80 multi-story buildings in Ercis, a town of 75,000 people close to the Iranian border. The region is among Turkey's most earthquake-prone zones.
By October 27, the death toll of the earthquake had risen to 550 and the number of injured to about 2,300. Many people are still believed to be trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings.
China, along with other countries, has said it will provide assistance to Turkey to help cope with the earthquake's aftermath. |
