Women water polo players from New Zealand and Uzbekistan compete in a game at the 14th World Championships of the International Swimming Federation in Shanghai on July 17.

The 16-day event started on July 16. This is the first time the biannual world championships for aquatic sports were held in China.

More than 5,000 top athletes from 180 countries and regions will compete during the championships. Forty final events will be held in swimming, 10 in diving, seven in synchronized swimming, six in open-water swimming and two in water polo. The competition will wrap up on July 31.
