Catastrophic Downpour and Landslide

Roads and houses in a village of Yueyang City, Hunan Province, were destroyed by landslides on June 10 (XINHUA)

Local villagers of Zhanqiao Town of Yueyang City were evacuated from the disaster area on June 11 (XINHUA)

Torrential rains hit Yueyang between June 9 and 10. The downpour—one of the largest rainstorms in 300 years—pounded six counties and triggered massive landslides. According to Xinhua News Agency, by June 14, the landslides killed 29 people. Another 20 were missing. The disaster also destroyed 9,059 homes. The number of people affected by the disaster has risen to 621,000.
