Streets and lanes in Fuzhou, capital city of southeast China's Fujian Province, are decorated with a wide variety of lanterns.
The 15th day of the first lunar month in the year is the Chinese Lantern Festival and, in the Chinese calendar, the first night to see a full moon.
To celebrate, people hang up thousands of colorful lanterns for people to appreciate. In the meantime, they eat yuanxiao, a small dumpling made of glutinous rice flour, which symbolizes family reunion.
Another important activity that night is guessing lantern riddles, which often contain messages of good fortune—an abundant harvest, prosperity and love. The 2011 Lantern Festival was on February 17. |
