On Flu Alert
On May 18, China Central Television (CCTV) interviewed Shu Yuelong, Director of the Chinese National Influenza Center, after it obtained the first A/H1N1 flu virus sample on the Chinese mainland from an imported case on May 17. Here are excerpts from the interview

FEAR OF FEVER: Port disease inspectors in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, test the body temperature of bus passengers arriving from Hong Kong. After the coastal province's first A/H1N1 flu case was confirmed, a public health alarm was activated (CHEN JIANLI)

CCTV: We are told that the Chinese mainland has successfully identified and isolated its first A/H1N1 flu virus sample. What is the significance behind this achievement?

PROTECTION TIPS: Border police in China's southern Fujian Province distribute pamphlets on preventing A/H1N1 flu to residents near an airport. The province confirmed its first case on May 24 (JIANG KEHONG)

Shu Yuelong: China had neither the virus nor any case of infection caused by it in the past. All the cases we have now are being imported. We want to know whether the virus in our cases is the same being seen in other countries. After obtaining this virus sample, we worked overnight to test its genetic sequence. Through comparison, we found that this virus is basically the same as those obtained by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Thus we can conclude that an A/H1N1 virus from the United States, where the patient came from, is the cause of the patient's disease.
