Tian told Xinhua that the country had enhanced international trademark protection in the past years. China had established a trademark law system that suited both the country and international regulations, Tian said, adding the country had joined six international treaties or conventions concerning trademarks.

Earlier in April, Gurry visited Beijing for a high-level, inter-regional WIPO intellectual property forum, his first visit to the country since he took office in 2008. Premier Wen Jiabao told Gurry during their meeting that the Chinese Government would continue to implement the IPR strategy to promote scientific innovation, economic growth, cultural prosperity and social progress.

2008 IPR Protection Statistics

China processed 828,000 patent applications during the year, a

19.4-percent increase, and registered 412,000 patents, an

annual increase of 17.1 percent. China processed 750,000 trademark registration applications and registered 403,000 trademarks. The government also gave copyrights to 49,000 computer programs during 2008.

By the end of the year, the State Intellectual Property Office had set up 44 IPR legal assistance centers around China. Local intellectual property offices had coordinated 1,126 patent disputes.

In 2008, the procuratorial organs ratified the arrests of 2,107 people involved in 1,210 IPR violation cases and prosecuted 2,697 people involved in 1,432 cases.

Courts around China tried 28,217 civil intellectual property cases.

Chinese industry and commerce administrations investigated 56,634 cases of trademark violation and confiscated and destroyed 19.63 million pieces (sets) of illegal logos and 22.87 million pieces of fake products.
