An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale hit Ruili City in southwest China's Yunnan Province on December 26, 2008.
The temblor affected more than 100,000 locals, with 19 people wounded. About 10,000 people were evacuated to safety. Initial estimates put economic losses at 236 million yuan ($34 million). Ruili is near the China-Myanmar border.
On the same day, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake also jolted Kunming, capital of Yunnan, damaging more than 100 houses but causing no casualties.
