Congress for Disabled

The Fifth National Congress of the China Disabled Persons Federation (CDPF) was held in Beijing on November 11-13. A total of 630 delegates representing China's 83 million disabled people heard and discussed a work report by the CDPF before adopting amendments to the federation's constitution.

Deng Pufang, Chairman of the CDPF, said that the federation would enhance construction of its local branches. By the end of last year, 90 percent of its branches in urban areas and 40 percent in rural regions had been established.

The federation employs more than 94,000 full-time staff and more than 400,000 volunteers in urban communities and villages.

Fast Link

Work began on November 2 on a high-speed rail link between Nanning of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Guangzhou of Guangdong Province, which will cut travel time between the two south China cities from almost 13 hours to three.

The link will be 577.1 km long, of which 61 percent will be in Guangxi, and allow trains to run up to 200 km per hour. It will be completed in an estimated 54 months and cost about 41 billion yuan ($6 billion), according to Chen Boshi, head of Nanning Railways Administration.

Internet Addiction

Chinese doctors released the country's first diagnostic definition of Internet addiction on November 8, amid efforts to address an increasing number of psychological problems that reportedly result from Internet overuse.
