DEADLY HOTEL BLAZE

Share

Firefighters comb a destroyed hotel in Yiwu City, Zhejiang Province, looking for the cause of a fire that killed 11 people on February 15.

An initial investigation showed the blaze was caused by the ignition of aging power lines.

Yiwu in east China is the country's largest trade hub of consumer commodities. It has more than 1,400 accessories enterprises and nearly 90,000 employees, with major product categories in necklaces, earrings, rings, brooches and ties.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, 10,360 fires were reported across China during the Lunar New Year holiday (February 6-12), which claimed 59 lives and incurred economic losses of 23.8 million yuan ($3.3 million). Firefighters involved in rescue efforts saved 7,741 people, the ministry said.
