AFTER SHOCKS

A local resident of Pu'er searches through the remains of his house, after an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck the mountainous city in southwest China's Yunnan Province on June 3.

The devastation left three dead and over 300 injured. At least 1 million people were affected and 180,000 local residents were displaced from their homes. Economic losses were estimated at 2.5 billion yuan (nearly $327 million).

Rescue work began immediately after the temblor, followed by donations from all over the country. According to local officials, they had received relief in cash and kind worth more than 17 million yuan by June 5, in addition to 27 million yuan from the Central Government.

Inset: Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visits a family in the disaster-hit area on June 5.
