Victim of Terrorism

People mourn the death of police officer Huang Qiang, who was killed during a raid on a terrorist camp on January 5, in a funeral home in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The local police destroyed the camp, located in the Pamir Gaoyuan Plateau, killing 18 suspected terrorists and arresting a further 17, a spokeswoman with the Xinjiang Public Security Department told a press conference on January 8.

The training camp was run by the Al Qaeda-linked East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), which is on the UN's list of terrorist organizations, she added.

The ETIM is accused of plotting a series of violent terrorist activities, including robbery and murders, in Xinjiang, resulting in heavy loss of life and property.

Police also seized 22 hand grenades and a large quantity of components for homemade explosives and weapons.

The crackdown on terrorism safeguards Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and China at large, and benefits the security and stability of China's neighboring regions and Central Asia, said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao.
