Prestigious Painter

The ground-breaking ceremony of the new Nantong University Fan Zeng Art Museum took place in east China's Jiangsu Province on May 17. Fan Zeng, renowned scholar, titan of Chinese painting and calligraphy, said at the ceremony that he will donate his works worth around 100 million yuan ($15.38 million) for exhibition, collection and study when the 6,600-square-meter museum is finished in 2012.

Fan, 73, was born in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, and graduated with a major in Chinese painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1962. In 1977, Fan gained fame and popularity with his work of Zhong Kui, a vivid depiction of a famous Chinese mythological character. In the 1980s, he founded the Oriental Arts Department at Nankai University and served as its dean until 1999. In 1983, Fan Zeng Art Museum was opened to the public in Japan. In 1984, he began staging his art exhibition tours in Asian and European countries.

Ye Xiaogang, a famous composer, is the art director of the 2011 Beijing Modern Music Festival, which took place on May 21-27.

Ye, 56, is regarded as one of the leading contemporary composers in China. He learned to play the piano at the age of 4 from his composer father. He went to the Central Conservatory of Music (CCM) to learn composition in 1978. In 1980, he studied in Professor Alexander Goehr's class at Cambridge University and received a full scholarship from the Eastman School of Music in the United States in 1987 to further his studies.

Due to his extraordinary talent, Ye was acclaimed one of the "Four Talents" of the conservatory along with Tan Dun, Guo Wenjing and Qu Xiaosong. Ye composed symphonies, chamber music and ballets, participated in many festivals and won various prizes. He is now vice president and professor of the CCM.

Drunken Musician

Gao Xiaosong, China's famous songwriter and music producer, was sentenced to six months in prison and fined 4,000 yuan ($606) for drunken driving on May 17. Gao was also banned from driving for five years. He has become the first celebrity to be punished under newly amended Road Traffic Safety Law that came into effect on May 1.

On May 9, Gao crashed his Infiniti SUV into a car stopped at a red light in Beijing. Later, a blood test showed that Gao had 243.04 mg of alcohol for 100 ml of blood, three times over the legal alcohol limit of 80 mg within 100 ml of blood.

Gao, 42, won fame because of his campus ballad music in the 1990s. His representative works include the song My Deskmate and the song collection Youth of No Regrets.
