16th Shanghai International Film Festival Starts
Share

The 16th Shanghai International Film Festival raised its curtain Saturday night with a glittering occasion involving over 400 international and local stars and filmmakers walking the red carpet into the opening ceremony.

A highlight of the night at the Shanghai Cultural Square were the appearances of veteran American director Oliver Stone and director of The King's Speech and Les Misérables Tom Hooper, along with Chinese stars Andy Lau, Chow Yun-Fat, Hark Tsui, Johnnie To, Gu Changwei and Jay Chou.

The occasion was a wonderful rendezvous for Stone, a member of the Golden Goblet Award Jury at the first festival 20 years ago who emerged as a winner of Film Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's event.

"I'm flattered and honored. Thank the jury," Stone said. "I'm happy to show here in Shanghai. We're able to show the Untold History of the United States tomorrow which is a ten-hour documentary film, and Alexander 2014 version which is a first world premier here tomorrow night. I hope you'll come and I like east to meet west. Let's try that."

Meanwhile, Helen Mirren and her director husband Taylor Hackford have confirmed that they will be attending the Film Festival.

Mirren who starred both in Elizabeth I and The Queen is expected to officially introduce Hitchcock with her staring Alma Reville, the wife of the late filmmaker.

Fourteen films from across the globe will be competing for the Golden Goblet. The winner will be chosen by a star-studded jury panel.

The Festival runs from June 15 to the 23.
