Chinese director Wang Quan'an's drama film White Deer Plain (Bai Lu Yuan) has been selected as the only Chinese film to compete for the Golden Bear award, at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival.
According to a report by mtime.com, the festival organizers announced the result on January 31. Prior to the decision, 22 projects had been shortlisted in the main competition section, including two other Chinese films, Zhang Yimou's The Flowers of War and Tsui Hark's Flying Swords of Dragon Gate. However, neither film is in the running for the top award.
White Deer Plain was adapted from a classic Chinese novel of the same name. Wang assembled a group of A-list actors to depict the saga, including Zhang Fengyi, Duan Yihong and Zhang Yuqi. The film passed an examination by China's state-run Film Bureau in January, thus allowing for its entry into the competition in Berlin.
Wang's 2006 film, Tuya's Marriage (Tuya De Hunshi) won the top award at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival and in 2010, the director won the Best Script award for his film Apart Together (Tuan Yuan) at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival.
The 62nd Berlin International Film Festival will commence on February 9, 2012.
