Chinese director Wang Xiaoshuai has earned his second Golden Palm nomination for his latest film Chongqing Blues, according to an announcement on the Cannes Film Festival's Web site.

The movie about a father and son will compete against 17 other films for the French film festival's top honor. Some of the other contenders are Japanese director Takeshi Kitano's Outrage and American filmmaker Doug Liman's Fair Game.

Wang was nominated for a Golden Palm in 2005 for the film Shanghai Dreams, a story about a family's poignant struggle to return to its hometown in Shanghai. The movie won a jury prize instead.

Wang is a leading member of China's "sixth-generation" directors, a group known for telling the stories of everyday people. In February, he was bestowed with a Chevalier in the French Order of Arts and Letters for his contributions to international cinema.

Jia Zhangke, another notable sixth-generation director, will present his Shanghai World Expo documentary I Wish I Knew at Cannes' Un Certain Regard section.

The 63rd Annual Cannes Film Festival runs from May 12 to 23. Alice in Wonderland director Tim Burton will be the jury president.
