Karen Hækkerup, Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark, addresses the press at the Royal Danish Embassy in Beijing on November 13 (CHEN RAN)

Denmark will be cooperating with China on food safety, public health and related fields, according to an announcement by a senior Danish official.

Karen Hækkerup, Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark, made the remarks at the Royal Danish Embassy in Beijing on November 13.

It is "a matter of great pride" for Denmark to be able to cooperate with China on such issues, and the Chinese market is a matter of interest to Denmark and close cooperation in these fields gives Denmark an opportunity to work closely and learn from their Chinese counterparts, said the minister.

Denmark started producing organic food in 1987 and today, some 8 percent of all food produced in the country adheres to organic standards. The country is looking to export and introduce their high-quality and environmentally friendly produce with the rest of the world, she said.

During her visit, Hækkerup held four talks and signed six agreements with various Chinese ministries. She also attended a seminar on integrity in food production with Chinese officials, researchers and companies.
