China's per capita consumption of antibiotics was 10 times the global average, said an official with the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) Thursday.

Wu Zhen, deputy head of the SFDA, made the remarks when attending a conference in Haikou City, capital of the south China's Hainan Province.

Wu said China produced 210,000 tonnes of antibiotics every year, adding that excessive use of the substance was very dangerous.
