Vaccine Not Ruled Out in Connection with Children's Illness
The Ministry of Health has confirmed that three children fell ill after receiving vaccines in northern Shanxi Province

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that three children fell ill after receiving vaccines in northern Shanxi Province. But it says no problems were found with the vaccines themselves.

The Health Ministry announced the result of an investigation Tuesday done by a team it dispatched to Shanxi from March 19th to April 1st. Team members examined the medical histories of the 15 children reported to be ill because of the vaccines.

The ministry says the vaccine could not be ruled out in connection with three of the cases.

Deng Haihua, spokesman of China Health Ministry, said, "One of the children had allergic purpura after inoculated measles vaccine, which is an abnormal reaction to the inoculation. Another showed symptom of acute flaccid paralysis after inoculated poliomyelitis vaccine, which can not be ruled out the connection with the vaccine."

"And the third had inflammation on the inoculation part after the injection of encephalitis attenuated live vaccine, which is a common reaction to the inoculation. The other 12 children's illness had nothing to do with the vaccine inoculation," he said.
