China to Further Cooperation With UN

Vice President Xi Jinping said Wednesday that China will continue to support and participate in the UN's work in multiple areas and constantly promote cooperation between the two sides.

Xi made the remarks during a meeting with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who is in Beijing for an official visit from July 17-19 and the opening ceremony of the fifth Ministerial Meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) on Thursday.

Xi stressed the important role of the UN in the peaceful development of the world and hoped that the world body will make more positive efforts to boost world development on the basis of respecting every country's sovereignty as well as people's own choices.

Xi said China will always propose and support multilateralism, abide by the rules and principles of the UN Charter, and maintain the authority and function of the UN.

Currently, the Chinese Government has finished some of the Millennium Development Goals, including halving the rate of impoverished people, making primary education more accessible and reducing the death rate for children.

"China will strive to comprehensively achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, and continue to promote South-South cooperation to boost common development for all developing countries," Xi said.

Ban said at the meeting that China has achieved great development over the recent decades and played an important role in international affairs, making great contributions to the UN's causes.

Ban spoke highly of China's efforts in helping the African countries and promoting global sustainable development, as well as the country's great contribution to the development of public health undertaking.

Ban expects further cooperation with China in order to maintain world peace, stability and development.
