Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Brazilian counterpart Antonio Patriota had a phone conversation on Wednesday to exchange views on the Libyan situation.

Yang said the Libyan situation has witnessed significant changes recently and China thinks it is important to realize peace and stability in Libya as soon as possible, and let the Libyan people determine their own future and start an inclusive political process at an early date.

Yang said China supports the UN to play a dominant role in Libya's post-war arrangement, and countries of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) group should strengthen coordination and wield a positive influence. Humanitarian aid should be continued in Libya.

China is willing to work with Brazil to help Libya realize stability and embark on the path of reconciliation and reconstruction as soon as possible, said Yang.

Yang stressed that under the current circumstances, the safety of all foreigners and foreign diplomatic institutions in Libya should be guaranteed and both China and Brazil should jointly appeal to Libya, the United Nations and other parties concerned to provide due assistance.

Patriota said he agreed with Yang's views. He added that Brazil attaches importance to China's role, and is willing to keep close communication with China on the Libyan situation.

The two also compared notes on the Syrian situation.
