Pakistan had fought a fierce war against terrorism on its soil throughout 2009, and would continue counter-terrorism efforts in 2010 with strong determination, a senior diplomat said.
Masood Khan, Pakistan's ambassador to China, made the remarks at a press briefing on December 29 in Beijing.
"Terrorism is a threat not only to Pakistan but to the entire region and the globe. Disruptions and dislocations, as a result of counter-terrorist operations in Afghanistan, should not lead to a surge in refugees and terrorists in Pakistani territory," he said.
"Afghanistan's problems should not be relocated to Pakistan. There must be a political strategy for a durable solution of the problems relating to Afghanistan. A purely military strategy is not likely to succeed."
Khan said the military operations in Bajaur, Swat/Malakand, and South Waziristan in Pakistan had been successful, as "the backbone of terrorists has been broken." Moreover, the government handled massive internal displacement of 2.5 million people with in a spirit of humanitarian spirit.
"Pakistan is pursuing a strategy of three Ds--development, dialogue and deterrence. We will not allow indigenous or foreign terrorists to use our soil to unleash terror. We are confident that our government, armed forces and security agencies will succeed in defeating terrorists," he said.
"Al-Qaeda and its affiliates pose a threat to Pakistan. We will spare no effort to meet this challenge to our national security. We urge the international community to do more in Afghanistan to help us achieve this objective." |
