Innovation needs to thrive

Huang Mingjin (Guangzhou Daily): Due to the absence of a diversified enrollment system, talented students often miss good university offers because they failed the college entrance exam. A unified exam, though fair, has its inherent shortcomings that hinder students with special talents.

In most cases, one test failure is not a fair reflection of the person's capacity. And the exam has already become the most challenging obstacle for students with special talents. Wang Meng, a renowned Chinese writer, for example, only passed the exam despite of his superior Chinese language skills.

Students with high exam scores are not guaranteed to become scientists or writers. Jiang, a teenage writer with nine books published, is of course a talented student above average in writing. If we judge these students by the usual testing mechanism, we may never find their specialties, and Tsinghua's inventive method can adjust and supplement the present over-rigid enrollment system. The present test-based assessment standard makes it harder for us to find talented students, and is a vital obstacle to foster college students with strong innovative capacity. Tsinghua's initiative can provide more specially abled students with higher education opportunities.
