Does Large Scale Publicity Benefit College Entrance Exam’s Top Achievers?
The media hype has gone too far according to critics. These zhuangyuans are gaining so much exposure they are now being used as marketable business opportunities and taken advantage of

Some people argue that the national college entrance examination is the peak of examination-oriented education and zhuangyuans are the products of this education. The positive influence of this process far outweighs the negative ones. At least, the publicity surrounding zhuangyuans can draw people's attention to, and gain their respect for, knowledge.

Gao Junbo (www.chinanews.com): It's undeniable that the media hype for zhuangyuans should be partly attributed to local governments boasting of their education efforts, schools seeking to recruit more new students and some business people trying to make a fast buck. However, the deep-rooted reason is the enthusiasm of students and parents for zhuangyuans.

After all, it's by no means an easy job to gain top honors in the national college entrance examination. They have a lot of successful experiences of how to study and can be role models for other students. There is therefore no harm in the media telling these successful stories to other students and their parents.

Interviewed by reporters, two zhuangyuans in north China's Hebei Province said they are just common students like others, and it is their hard work and good fortune that made them laureates in this important examination. To make this dedication known to the public will only help people to treat the national examination in a more rational way. Their stories will prove to do more good than harm.

Zhou Yun (Yangcheng Evening News): Are the scores in the national college examination private information confined only to the students themselves? If this information is private, it's quite possible for students, parents, schools and society to develop suspicion toward the credibility of the examination results. This worry is not groundless, as there are still corruption cases being dealt with during the recruitment of new college entrants.

I can't see anything wrong in publicizing the successful experiences of zhuangyuans. To impart to other students their experiences in learning, examinations and even their way of life, can be a big help. The publicity around college entrance examination top scholars can be labeled encouraging examination-oriented education. However, the reality is that nowadays this education model can still decide one's fate. Thus, while the talent selection system still focuses on examinations, it's helpful to tell students how to do better in those examinations.

Shang Qun (Modern Education): Students also belong to society. When cooperating with businesses to create financial benefits, they are making a contribution to society. To involve zhuangyuans in commercial affairs indicates that the students' social role is being noticed. As far as the involved students are concerned, to know something about business before entering universities is a good opportunity for them to improve their interpersonal skills, which is an area of weakness for most Chinese students.

It is the media that makes zhuangyuans' valuable methods and experiences known to other students. To spread these successful experiences through the media is much more effective than teachers' trying to teach the same thing. The more famous zhuangyuans become, the more students will benefit from their valuable experiences.
