Sixth Beijing International Music Competition Kicks Off

The opening ceremony of the Sixth Beijing International Music Competition took place on the evening of November 2.

Opera and clarinet events will both be held at this year's competition.

Forty-seven opera singers and 34 clarinet players made it to the finals, trimmed down from 218 initial contestants. Each of the finalists will go through four further rounds of selection that will take at the Beijing Music Hall November 3-13.

World-renowned artists in opera and clarinet, including Cord Garben of Germany, Francisco Araiza of Mexico, Susanna Pescetti of Italy, Michel Lethiec of France and Zhu Ailan of China, are among the jury.

The finals for clarinet and opera will be held on November 12 and 13, respectively, with the award ceremony following on November 14. On November 16, a concert of classical music performed by members of the jury is also to be held.

Launched in 2006, the Beijing International Music Competition is one of the world's top classical music competitions and the largest of its kind in Asia. Currently, it consists of five disciplines: opera, clarinet, string quartet, cello, and flute.
