Joint Statement on Standards Cooperation Among the People's Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea

Share

We, the leaders of the People's Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea gathered for the Third Summit Meeting in Jeju, the Republic of Korea, on May 29, 2010.

We shared the common view that it is important to strengthen trilateral cooperation on standards. We also expressed our satisfaction with the recent progress of such cooperation among the three countries, and with the resulting benefits to the international standardization community. We recognized that cooperation on standards is a key tool by which to facilitate trade through the elimination of unnecessary technical barriers to trade, and also acknowledged that cooperation on standards can create new driving forces for the economic growth of the Northeast Asian region.

We shared the recognition that it is necessary to discuss detailed methods by which to achieve stronger trilateral cooperation on standards, and affirmed that we need to play a greater role in the global economic recovery by promoting industrial and technological collaboration within the Northeast Asian region.

We emphasized that the active participation of governments, industries and experts in all three countries is essential to the establishment of an infrastructure for better cooperation on standards.

We resolved to promote cooperation in the following areas, taking the above-mentioned issues into consideration:

Researching harmonization of standards of mutual interest in key fields for joint development and proposal of harmonized international standards;

Exchanging information and experts, and fully utilizing the Northeast Asia Standards Cooperation Forum to promote international standardization and subsequent standards harmonization throughout the Northeast Asian region; and

Researching to find how best to facilitate trade through standardization and conformity assessment.

We will continually strive to achieve measurable results in all our efforts to cooperate on standards.
