Two books involving Wu Jianmin, President of China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU), were published by Renmin University Press recently.

Case Studies in Diplomacy, written by Wu, is the first textbook of its kind in China. It features 19 case studies that can be categorized in three ways: the mental disposition of diplomats; important moments in China's diplomatic history from 1991 to 2003; and crisis management during emergencies such as the 9/11 attack. Moreover, with its lively writing style, the book provides background information, dilemmas during China's diplomatic history, detailed stories, as well as author insights and analysis on crucial issues.

The preface is written by Qian Qichen, former Vice Premier of the State Council. An excerpt: "China's diplomacy is at its peak and it is playing a more important role in the era of peace and development. I'm delighted to see that Case Studies in Diplomacy written by Wu is now available as a textbook to students and professionals in foreign relations."

Wu has gained a great deal of experience in his 42-year-long career as a diplomat.

"By and large, there are three reasons for my writing," said Wu. "Firstly, I'd like to unveil the mysterious mask of China's diplomacy. The mysteriousness is outdated, and does no good for the people and the nation, or for the cooperation between China and the rest of the world.

"Secondly, I'd like to push forward the study of foreign relations, for a huge amount of case studies is required during research. Finally, I'd like to explore students' potential for academic research."

According to Wu, the course -- case studies in diplomacy -- has been offered after his taking office as CFAU's president. Until now, more than 70 cases have been submitted, mainly by senior diplomats.

"I think the number will reach at least 100 in the coming year," said Wu.

Another book, Interviews with Wu Jianmin, edited by Han Min, features over 60 interviews by media professionals nationwide. The writing styles vary, but readers can easily partake of Wu's insights. The book consists of four parts: Q&A; analyses of current global issues and China's diplomacy; perspectives on the World Expo (Wu used to be the Chairman of Bureau of International Exposition), the Olympic Games as well as other economic- and culture-related issues; and hopes for the youth.

"These two books are worth reading for everyone," stated Zhao Qizheng, former Minister of State Council Information Office and incumbent dean of News School of Renmin University. "We are now in the era of globalization. These are must-read books for students and professionals in foreign relations as well as media professionals."

According to He Yaomin, President of Renmin University Press, versions in traditional Chinese, English and other languages (yet to be decided) -- besides simplified Chinese -- will also be available next year.
