A summer trip to Xinjiang often brings to mind sweeping grasslands and alpine lakes. Boertala (Bortala) Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, whose name means "emerald grassland" in Mongolian, offers exactly that and more. Nestled along the northern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains, Boertala combines diverse natural landscapes with rich ethnic traditions, making it an ideal destination for an unhurried summer getaway. First stop: Sayram Lake Sayram Lake is undoubtedly Boertala's signature attraction. Known as "the last teardrop of the Atlantic," the lake was formed by precipitation from warm, moisture-laden air currents originating from the Atlantic and lifted by the Tianshan Mountains. Its crystal-clear, pale blue waters boast visibility of more than 10 meters. In summer, Sayram Lake presents a breathtaking scene. Snow-capped peaks rise in the distance, while expansive pastures surround the shoreline. Wildflowers bloom in abundance, and blue skies dotted with white clouds are mirrored on the lake's tranquil surface, creating a picture-perfect landscape that becomes even more enchanting at sunrise and sunset, when shifting light transforms the scenery throughout the day. The scenic route encircling the lake stretches roughly 90 km. Visitors traveling by car should observe the park's traffic regulations, including speed limits on certain sections. Setting aside a full day is recommended, allowing plenty of time to stop along the way and take in the views at a leisurely pace. Second stop: Wenquan County The next stop is Wenquan County. Its name, literally meaning "hot springs" in Chinese, reflects the abundance of geothermal resources that have long defined the area. Here, visitors can enjoy a soak in thermal waters while surrounded by cool mountain air in the height of summer. Rich in geothermal resources, the Tianquan Scenic Area is often the first choice for visitors to the county. In addition to natural hot spring pools, it features waterfalls, canyons, forests, snow-capped mountains and alpine lakes. The refreshing summer temperatures make it an excellent retreat from the heat. The Shengquan Scenic Area, meanwhile, is known for its picturesque outdoor setting. Bathing in the hot springs while taking in views of verdant mountains and flowing waters is a great way to relax both body and mind. Third stop: Strange Stone Valley Those fascinated by geological wonders should not miss out on Guaishiyu, literally meaning "Strange Stone Valley." Millions of years of weathering and water erosion have produced this vast collection of unusual rock formations. The massive boulders appear in a variety of forms and colors and in summer, patches of green vegetation add an extra touch of vitality to the rugged terrain. Boertala is also home to Xiaerxili (Sharhili), often described as a gene pool of flora and fauna. This hidden natural paradise can easily be combined with a visit to Guaishiyu on the same day. Its pristine ecosystem remains remarkably well preserved, and the lush summer vegetation makes it an ideal destination for hiking and photography fans. As access to certain areas may be regulated, visitors are advised to check entry requirements in advance. Fourth stop: Bole and Alashankou Reserve the final half day of your journey for Bole City and Alashankou, also known as the Alataw Pass, to experience the prefecture's cultural diversity and distinctive border character. Bole is home to multiple ethnic groups, and its streets reflect a rich blend of traditions. Visitors may have the chance to enjoy Jangar performances, a traditional Mongolian oral epic, or listen to tuobuxiuer, a traditional two-stringed plucked chordophone, while sampling local specialties such as milk tea and ethnic pastries. Alashankou is one of China's most important land ports of entry and serves as a major gateway in the country's westward opening up. There, standing before the border gate, one can get a tangible sense of the unique atmosphere of a frontier crossing. Local markets also feature a variety of imported goods with international influences. However, Alashankou is known as one of Xinjiang's nine major wind corridors, and even in summer strong winds are common. Protection against wind is therefore recommended. Overall, summer travel in Boertala calls for a few practical preparations. Sunscreen and insect repellent are essential, and because mountain weather can change quickly, bringing a light jacket is strongly advised. Those planning to drive should pay attention to road conditions, as mobile signals can be weak in some remote areas, making advance route planning especially important. Above all, there is no need to rush. Slow down and take the time to appreciate the scenery and cultural richness of this green grassland. |
