Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) startup DeepSeek has recently been making waves around the world, drawing attention to China's advancements in AI technology, as well as the country's growing capabilities in scientific and technological development at large.

According to the 2024 Global Innovation Index, released by the World Intellectual Property Organization, China ranks 11th among the world's most innovative economies, up from 29th place in 2015.

Its major strategy for cultivating and strengthening its strategic emerging industries is the deep integration of technological and industrial innovation.

China excels among global economies due to its diverse industries' enthusiasm for technological advancement. This innovation environment fosters long-term sustainable economic growth, providing a solid foundation for economic transformation and contributing to high-quality growth.

Achievements in science and technology innovation stem from a robust environment and strong financial support. In 2024, the country's total research and development expenditure exceeded 3.6 trillion yuan ($502 billion), an 8.3-percent year-on-year increase. The government prioritizes science and technology innovation, as highlighted by the National Conference on Education in September 2024, which emphasized integrating education, innovation and talent development.

The role of enterprises in China's technological advancement continues to grow, with over 570 industrial companies listed among the global top 2,500 for research and development. Firms like tech giant Huawei and electric vehicle manufacturer BYD have also become highly competitive in the global market.

China is focusing on the development of high-quality productive forces characterized by innovation, efficiency and sustainability. Moving forward, the country aims to promote the intelligent upgrading of traditional industries and support the rise of strategic emerging industries.

This approach will ensure that science and technology remain a powerful engine for industrial development and contribute to economic growth.
